STEM

Since 2013, the Worcester County Department of Economic Development has provided a STEM summer enrichment continuum for students ages 12-24.  Our STEM Summer Programs connect Worcester County STEM businesses with the future workforce and provide opportunities for classroom studies to be applied to real life tasks.

The continuum consists of four components:

    • Reach for the Stars I STEM Camp for NEW campers (2019/2020 grades 6-8)  Applications are accepted February 1- March 31, 2020
    • NEW!  Reach for the Stars II STEM Camp for RETURNING campers or first time campers in grade 8 (2019/2020 grades 7-8)
    • Worcester STEM Leadership Cohort (2019/2020 grades 9-11)  Applications are accepted February 1-March 31, 2020
    • STEP UP STEM Internship Program (2019/2020 grade 12, college, and graduate students)  Applications are accepted December 15, 2019 - March 31, 2020

The information below is for the Summer 2019 programs.  Changes and expansions will be announced in late 2019 and this information will be updated by December 15 2019 to reflect the 2020 programs.

    STEP UP STEM Internship Program

Schedules vary depending on employers.  100 total hours between June 1 and July 26.

Eligibility: Worcester County residents currently in grade 12 and college and graduate students who maintain residency in Worcester County (including those who reside out-of-county or out-of-state at college during the academic year)

The STEP UP Internship Program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience in a career field related to STEM.  2019 STEP UP internships will include placements in local agencies and businesses in the fields of medicine, software development, information technology, engineering, environmental science, and digital media production.  STEP UP STEM Interns participate in paid professional development sessions throughout the internship experience teaching valuable career readiness skills.

Each intern will be paid for 100 total hours at $11/hour.

Full time internships in partnership with STEP UP are available at NASA Wallops Flight Facility and Northrop Grumman, but additional applications must also be completed.  NASA interns must apply by February 28 using the NASA OSSI portal at http://intern.nasa.gov.  Applicants for Northrop Grumman internships need to be engineering students who have completed at least two years of college.  Applications can be completed at http://www.northropgrumman.com.  Please email a copy of your resume to fawn@sinepuxentgroup.com to express interest, in addition to completing the WCED STEP UP STEM Internship Application linked here.

    Worcester STEM Leadership Cohort

    July 22-26, 2019 9am-4pm

Eligibility: Worcester County residents currently in grades 9-11 in the 2018-2019 school year

The STEM Leadership Cohort will participate in professional development sessions on a variety of college and career readiness topics, including resume writing, interview skills, college application essays, workplace communication, conflict resolution, leadership, and entrepreneurship.  Students will receive mentorship from several of our STEM workforce partners and participate in a workshop at NASA Wallops Flight facility. This program will be held on the campus of University of Maryland Eastern Shore at the Engineering and Aviation Sciences building.  Transportation is provided from consolidated pick-up points throughout Worcester County.  Some STEM leadership students may also be selected for early placement as a STEP UP Intern depending on availability of internships.

Each participant will earn a $200 stipend.

Reach for the Stars STEM Camp Level 1 and Level 2 (New!)

    July 22-26, 2019 9am-4pm

Eligibility: Worcester County residents.  Level 1 is for students currently in grades 6-8 (2018-2019 school year) who are first time participants in our camp.  Level 2 is for students currently in grades 7-8 (2018-2019 school year) who are returning participants to our camp.  Since current 8th graders are in their final year of camp eligibility, some first-time 8th graders may be assigned to Level 2 as space allows.   A goal of the WCED STEM Summer Programs is to provide students from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in STEM fields exposure to STEM careers.

Campers will participate in hands-on activities and engineering challenges with dynamic instructors to learn about computer science, robotics, aviation, and aerospace engineering.  Camp will be held on the campus of University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the Engineering and Aviation Science building.  Transportation is provided from consolidated pick-up points throughout Worcester county.  Field trips to STEM workplaces will include NASA Wallops Flight Facility.  Level 1 and Level 2 will be combined at times, but will mostly participate in different activities and field trips throughout the week.

There is no cost for participation. Space is limited and placement is not guaranteed.

Application Process: Applications for all four components of the program can be completed online (links at top of this page) through March 31.  Application for internships began on December 15, 2018.  Applications for camp and the leadership cohort opened on February 1.  Supporting documents are requested, including transcripts, an online statement, and online recommendations.  Transcripts should be mailed to:   Worcester County Economic Development, ATTN: Fawn Mete, Program Manager, 100 Pearl Street Ste B, Snow Hill, MD 21863. Internship applicants are encouraged to email a resume to fawn@sinepuxentgroup.com in addition to completing the application.  Interviews for internship applicants will be scheduled on a rolling basis as applications are received, so early application is encouraged.  Interviews for STEM Leadership Cohort applicants will be scheduled for April. Applicants will be notified of status no later than May 1, 2019.  Applicants will be notified of Reach for the Stars STEM Camp placements during the first week of April.  Space is limited and placement is not guaranteed.
